Lockdown 2.0; we’ve done this before, we can do it again! Determined to have a healthier lockdown than last time, I wanted to share some ideas for getting out and about because this time, we have a few more options.

At the time of writing, the guidance is that exercise is permitted throughout the day, although we are asked to use our discretion regarding what is considered reasonable. Combining fresh air and exercise has huge benefits for our physical and mental well-being so this will be my focus.

  1. Local walks

We have an overwhelming choice of fabulous walks on our doorstep here in Surrey. The Surrey Hills offer breath taking views, and being the UK’s most heavily wooded county, we have plenty of woodland walks to choose from too. There is no doubt that the colours at this time of year are warming and the occasional chill in the air or the glare of the low sun can certainly help to enliven our senses. We are allowed to walk with a friend provided social distancing is adhered to so why not take a stroll around Newlands Corner, Horsell, Chobham or Ockham commons for example, or visit the Grufalo train at Alice Holt forest and feel relaxed surrounded by the serenity of nature.

  1. National Trust

I am delighted that National Trust locations have been allowed to stay open (houses are closed). My favourites in our area are Polesden Lacey, Claremont Landscape Gardens, Hatchlands Park and Winkworth Aboretum. As usual, you will be able to book for the week ahead on the Friday of the proceeding week.

  1. RHS Wisley

Being both a garden and a garden centre, RHS Wisley has also been permitted to stay open. The gardens are simply stunning in the autumn sun. The playground is open and coffee shops remain open for takeaway but you must remember to book your entry time slot to the garden in advance.

  1. The Lookout Centre, Bracknell

The vast outdoor playground under the tree canopy remains open but must be prebooked, a reduced capacity is now in operation and you will have a 90 minute slot. As usual there is no charge to play, just a charge to park. All picnic tables have been removed but the coffee shop remains open for takeaway.

  1. Windsor Great Park

Windsor Great Park includes two of my favourite walks from Virginia Water and The Savill Garden. Parking charges apply as usual. Virginia Water Pavilion, The Savill Garden and Savill Building are closed until 3rd December, the play area is also closed. Temporary toilet facilities have been provided and takeaway catering outlets remain open.

  1. Visit the The Sculpture Park

Enjoy a walk and admire over 600 sculptures along the streams and walkways whilst listening to the avid birdlife at The Sculpture Park in Farnham.  Tickets must be booked in advanced.

  1. A walk in the park

Stoke Park in Guildford, Woking Park, the fabulous Frimley Lodge Park and Lightwater Country Park are just a handful of parks that require no booking and are a delight to wonder around.

  1. A river walk

Take a stroll along the Thames at Runneymede Pleasure Ground in Egham. There is a fabulous playground and ample green space for little ones to run around. No booking required.

  1. A canal walk

The River Wey walk from Weybridge to New Haw used to be an important route for commercial barges carrying grain from the Royal Docks in London to Coxes Mill in Addleston. The circular walk is flat and takes approximately three hours. The last three remaining Wey barges can still be seen at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford.

  1. Your high street!

Last but absolutely not least, take a walk down your local high street. Call into the butcher, the baker, the fruit and veg shop. Support local, buy local and enjoy.
